Even after warnings and many penalties, garbage collection system could not be improved: DM

DEHRADUN: After issuing several warnings to the companies over  negligence in garbage pickup DM Savin Bansal has taken strict action on 18 November, Monday by inviting fresh tenders for garbage pickup in 47 out of 100 wards of Dehradun Nagar Nigam.

On the directions of District Magistrate/ Administrator Savin Basnal, fresh tenders have been invited for door-to-door garbage pickup in 47 wards under Municipal Corporation Dehradun. As per the officials, these measures have been taken as no significant improvement was made within the given time period for improving the performance of the poor system of garbage pickup in the city despite several warnings issued to the companies over negligence.

Soon tenders will be invited for door-to-door garbage pickup from 26 other wards. The administration has claimed that Watergrace Company is looking after the work of door-to-door garbage pickup from 47 wards of the Municipal Corporation and Econwest Management has the work of garbage pickup in 26 wards.

According to the District Magistrate complaints were being received for a long time regarding door-to-door garbage collection. District Magistrate Savin Bansal, after assuming the charge of District Magistrate Dehradun and Administrator, has taken a strict stand on door-to-door garbage collection and cleanliness system of the city.

Heavy penalty action has also been taken against these companies for not carrying out garbage collection work as per the standards, but the company did not improve its performance and complaints from the public kept coming every day, on which the District Magistrate has taken strict action and invited new companies through tender for these works.

It has been told that the work of door-to-door garbage collection is being taken back from Watergrace Company and Econwest Management. Complaints were being received against both the companies. Regular complaints were being received about vehicles not arriving on time and not lifting garbage regularly. Even after several penalties and warnings, the work style could not be improved. And even after several penalty actions and warnings by the Municipal Corporation on garbage collection performance, dress of the employees, ID cards and fitness of vehicles, there was no improvement.
