Dehradun: There is tremendous enthusiasm among the youth to cast their votes for the first time in the upcoming three-tier Panchayat elections in Dehradun district. As many as 38,371 young voters aged between 18 to 20 years are registered to vote for the first time across the six development blocks of the district. This includes 18,092 female and 20,279 male voters.
Polling will be conducted in two phases on July 24 and July 28 for posts of Gram Panchayat Member, Pradhan Gram Panchayat, Member Area Panchayat, and Member District Panchayat.
In Dehradun district:
113 candidates are contesting for 30 District Panchayat member posts.
698 candidates are vying for 220 Member Area Panchayat posts.
For 409 Pradhan Gram Panchayat posts, after some unopposed elections, 1,018 candidates remain in the fray.
Out of 3,397 Gram Panchayat Member posts, many were elected unopposed or had no nominations, with 1,556 candidates contesting.
Overall, 5,45,392 voters are registered in the Panchayat areas of these six development blocks, comprising 2,62,639 women, 2,82,739 men, and 14 other voters, which also includes 1,679 Divyang voters.
There is a visible excitement among the first-time young voters eager to exercise their franchise in these local body elections. The allotment of election symbols to the contesting candidates will be done on July 14.
