Kanwar Mela 2025: CS Orders Swift and Stringent Preparations for Safe & Systematic Event

The mela is scheduled from July 11 to July 23, with major events including Jalabhishek (July 13–17), Dak Kanwar (July 20–23) and Shravan Shivratri (July 23).

Dehradun: In a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan, officials were directed to expedite preparations for the upcoming Kanwar Mela to ensure its safe, smooth and systematic organization. The mela is scheduled from July 11 to July 23, with major events including Jalabhishek (July 13–17), Dak Kanwar (July 20–23), and Shravan Shivratri (July 23).

Bardhan emphasized that any form of negligence—particularly in basic amenities such as drinking water, sanitation, toilets, and parking—will invite strict disciplinary action against the responsible officials and implementing agencies.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order, the Chief Secretary warned of strict action against individuals involved in unruly behavior, drug consumption or creating disturbances during the fair. The use of loud DJ systems will be strictly prohibited.

Urban Local Bodies were instructed to ensure continuous cleanliness and maintenance of public toilets and parking areas.

The Drinking Water Institute was directed to maintain uninterrupted water supply.

The Food Safety Department will conduct regular inspections to ensure food quality and hygiene.

The Supply Department was asked to monitor prices and ensure the availability of essential items.

All departments were instructed to hold pre-event coordination meetings and finalize their respective responsibilities.

The Irrigation Department was specifically directed to ensure cleanliness and implement safety protocols at all bathing ghats and bridges.

Robust Plan for Traffic and Security

The District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Haridwar presented a detailed roadmap for crowd and traffic management. Key highlights include:

Designated permanent and temporary parking areas

Dedicated route diversion plans

The fair zone has been divided into 16 super zones, 37 zones, and 134 sectors to streamline surveillance and ensure rapid response.

Officials from Dehradun, Pauri, and Tehri districts also shared their preparation strategies and submitted budgetary requirements for both permanent and temporary infrastructure works.

Senior Officials in Attendance

The meeting was attended by senior officials including Additional Director General of Police V. Murugeshan, Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey, Inspector General K.S. Nagnyal, as well as District Magistrates and senior police officials from all key districts involved. Officers from all concerned departments were also present.
