Nation Salutes Its Healers on National Doctor’s Day — 1 July

“A simple “Thank You, Doctor” goes a long way in acknowledging their tireless commitment to healing and saving lives.”

Every year, India observes National Doctor’s Day on 1st July to honour and appreciate the dedicated services of doctors and the entire medical fraternity. This day is celebrated in memory of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a legendary physician, freedom fighter, educationist and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, whose birth and death anniversary both fall on this date. In recognition of his immense contributions to health, education and public service, Dr. B.C. Roy was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1961.

Doctor’s Day serves as a vital reminder of the critical role doctors play in society. They are not only healthcare providers but also counselors, motivators and often lifesavers. From addressing routine health concerns to managing complex diseases and leading the fight during public health emergencies, doctors stand resolutely at the frontline of healthcare systems.

The day also highlights the ethical pillars of the medical profession — empathy, patient confidentiality, tireless service and an unwavering commitment to the highest standards of care.

Theme for 2025: ‘Behind the Mask: Who Heals the Healers?’

Each year, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) announces a theme to spotlight a key aspect of healthcare. The theme for 2025 is: “Behind the Mask: Who Heals the Healers?”

This theme draws attention to the mental health and well-being of doctors, urging society to recognize the emotional and psychological challenges they face.

Celebrating Doctor’s Day Across India

Doctor’s Day offers an opportunity for patients, communities and institutions to express gratitude for the relentless dedication of doctors. Across hospitals and clinics in India, the day is marked by:

Felicitation ceremonies to honour outstanding doctors and healthcare teams

Health camps and blood donation drives

Public awareness programmes and talks

Many people also reach out personally to their family physicians and specialists to convey their appreciation. Hospitals often use this occasion to acknowledge exceptional service and dedication within their teams.

Recognising Challenges and Strengthening Support

While we celebrate their achievements, it is equally important to acknowledge the enormous pressures under which doctors work. Long hours, the emotional burden of life-and-death decisions, medico-legal risks and instances of violence against healthcare workers are grave concerns that need urgent attention.

Doctor’s Day is thus also a moment to reaffirm societal support, respect and the need to ensure a safe, dignified and supportive working environment for the medical community.

A Heartfelt Tribute

Doctors devote their lives to keeping society healthy. As we observe Doctor’s Day on 1 July 2025, let us pay heartfelt tribute to these noble professionals for their dedication, resilience and compassion.

A simple “Thank You, Doctor” goes a long way in acknowledging their tireless commitment to healing and saving lives.
