CM Pushkar Singh Dhami Participates in “Save Himalaya Abhiyan-2025”; Emphasizes Balance Between Development and Environmental Conservation

Dehradun: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami attended the “Save Himalaya Abhiyan-2025” program organized by Hindustan newspaper at a hotel on Mussoorie Road on Tuesday. During the event, the Chief Minister honored individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions in the field of Himalayan and environmental conservation.
Highlighting the importance of the campaign, the Chief Minister recalled that Hindustan launched the “Save Himalaya Abhiyan” in 2012 with the aim of raising awareness about protecting the Himalayan ecosystem. “What began as a newspaper initiative has now become a people’s movement, inspiring citizens to actively contribute towards preserving the Himalayas,” he said.
Describing the Himalayas as a unique blend of spiritual, cultural, and natural heritage, Dhami underlined their critical role in sustaining life. “The mighty rivers that originate from the Himalayas provide drinking water and energy to millions, while its rare flora and fauna remain vital to our environmental heritage,” he added.
The Chief Minister stressed that environmental balance must go hand-in-hand with development. Acknowledging climate change as an emerging global threat, he said the state government is taking focused measures to protect forest cover, conserve water resources, and promote clean energy solutions in the Himalayan region. Initiatives such as large-scale plantation drives, water conservation programs, and environmental awareness campaigns are being carried out regularly to safeguard the fragile mountain ecosystem.
Dhami also highlighted the significance of sustainable tourism, a key economic driver for the state. He mentioned the successful introduction of a digital deposit refund system for plastic waste management, which has already reduced 72 tonnes of carbon emissions in the Himalayan region — a model demonstrating how small steps can bring impactful environmental benefits.
Calling for collective responsibility, the Chief Minister said, “We need to do much more to conserve the Himalayas. The traditional knowledge, culture, and lifestyles of Himalayan communities teach us how to live in harmony with nature. Integrating their wisdom into our environmental policies will strengthen our conservation efforts.”
Concluding his address, Dhami urged citizens to treat Himalayan preservation as a shared mission. “Only when every individual understands and fulfills their responsibility towards conserving the Himalayas will we be able to protect this priceless heritage for future generations,” he said.
