Nainital – The Uttarakhand High Court on Wednesday continued hearing petitions challenging the reservation roster for the upcoming three-tier Panchayat elections in the state. A division bench comprising Chief Justice G. Narendra and Justice Alok Mehra heard arguments for nearly two hours during the afternoon session.
Due to time constraints, the court adjourned the matter and scheduled the next hearing for Thursday, 26 June. The interim stay on the election process will remain in effect until further orders.
During the proceedings, the High Court clarified that its intention is not to stall the Panchayat elections indefinitely. Instead, the objective is to ensure that the election process adheres to constitutional provisions and legal standards. The bench emphasized the need to conduct the elections without unnecessary delay, while maintaining transparency and legality in the implementation of the reservation policy.
Following the High Court’s interim directives, the State Election Commission has already postponed the nomination process for the Panchayat elections until further notice.
