Dehradun, June 19: Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan has directed all Principal Secretaries, Secretaries, Department Heads, and District Magistrates to prioritize women self-help groups (SHGs) in various government programs and functions. This directive is aimed at boosting the participation of SHGs formed under the Uttarakhand State Rural Livelihood Mission, particularly in promoting rural entrepreneurship and livelihood opportunities.
The Chief Secretary highlighted the commendable work being done by women SHGs in sectors such as food processing and canteen operations. He noted that these groups are not only providing quality services but are also maintaining food safety and hygiene standards.
In his orders, Bardhan instructed that SHGs should be given preference, wherever feasible, for catering services in all government and semi-government meetings, programs, and events conducted at the state, district, and block levels. Departments have been advised to coordinate with the Project Director or Assistant Project Director of Rural Development to facilitate this process.
Further, the Chief Secretary emphasized the promotion of locally made handicraft products and goods associated with the “House of Himalayas” brand. These items can be used as souvenirs or gifts for visiting dignitaries and special guests at district-level events.
He also advocated for the inclusion of traditional, millet-based, and nutrient-rich local food items as refreshments in official workshops, training sessions, and meetings. Additionally, SHGs should be given preference for running canteens and outlets in government buildings.
Bardhan clarified that all purchases and services availed from SHGs must comply with the procurement rules laid down by the state’s finance department to ensure transparency and proper regulation.
