Dehradun: As a part of World Breastfeeding Week 1-7 August Dr Sujata Sanjay, Gynecologist and Obstetrician organised breastfeeding orientation webinars. Over 150 medical nursing students and teenage girls from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab participated in this public awareness lecture.
In order to spread awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and to protect infants from malnutrition, Dr. Sujata Sanjay emphasised the importance of breastfeeding for the mothers, pregnant women and nursing students under World Breastfeeding Week. Three webinars, one seminar and two radio programmes were organised by Dr Sujata Sanjay and her hospital.
According to a UNICEF report, about 770 million newborns in the world or one out of every two babies do not get mother milk in the first hour. Due to lack of mother’s milk for 2 to 23 hours, within 28 days from the birth of a child, the figure of mortality rate is 40 per cent, while even after 24, the death rate is due to lack of milk. The biggest reason for the death of new born babies in the country is also the non-feeding of mother’s milk.
Dr Sujata stated that mother’s milk is no less than nectar for the infant. It is not only necessary for the all-round development of the baby, but it also benefits the mental and physical health of the mother. Mother’s milk is very important for the baby in the first hour after birth. Despite this, a lot of misconceptions are still spread among the people regarding breastfeeding. Even today there is a lack of awareness among people about needs of breastfeeding.
