Dehradun Gears Up for Grand Independence Day Celebrations; National Anthem to Echo Across Parade Ground
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to Hoist the National Flag; Freedom Fighters, Statehood Activists and Outstanding Achievers to be Honoured
Partition Horrors Remembrance Day to be Observed on August 14; ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ and ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ Campaigns to Gain Momentum
Dehradun, July 30, 2026:
Preparations for the grand celebration of India’s 79th Independence Day have entered the final phase in Dehradun. The district administration has drawn up a comprehensive plan to ensure that the national festival is celebrated with dignity, patriotism and public participation across the district.
A high-level review meeting chaired by District Magistrate Dr. Ashish Chauhan was held on Thursday at Rishiparna Auditorium, where detailed arrangements for Independence Day and associated events were finalized. Officials from all concerned departments were directed to complete preparations within the stipulated timeline.
Grand Observance of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on August 14
The District Magistrate announced that Partition Horrors Remembrance Day (Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas) will be observed on August 14 with solemnity and grandeur. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will attend the event as the chief guest.
Officials have been instructed to identify an appropriate venue and invite survivors and families affected by the 1947 Partition. A special exhibition highlighting the human tragedy of Partition will also be organized to educate the younger generation, promote national unity, strengthen social harmony and reinforce humanitarian values.
Patriotic Celebrations at Historic Parade Ground
The main Independence Day ceremony will be held at Dehradun’s historic Parade Ground.
National flags will be hoisted at all government offices across the district at 9:00 a.m., while Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will unfurl the Tricolour at 10:00 a.m. at Parade Ground.
The ceremony will feature the National Anthem accompanied by the police band, followed by an impressive ceremonial parade by contingents of the Police, Central Armed Police Forces, Home Guards, NCC cadets and the Provincial Guard, who will salute the National Flag.
The event will also be telecast live, enabling citizens across the district to participate virtually in the celebrations.
Honouring the Nation’s Heroes and Outstanding Contributors
During the ceremony, the Chief Minister will honour freedom fighters, Uttarakhand statehood activists, distinguished sportspersons, police personnel and officers and employees from various departments for their exemplary service and outstanding achievements.
The administration aims to make the national festival not only a ceremonial occasion but also a platform to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to society and the nation.
City to Be Immersed in Patriotic Spirit
To create a vibrant patriotic atmosphere, the District Magistrate directed that patriotic songs be played through loudspeakers at major intersections across the district from 6:00 p.m. on August 14.
Government offices, public buildings and prominent landmarks will also be illuminated with decorative LED lighting, transforming the city into a symbol of national pride on the eve of Independence Day.
Educational Institutions to Organize Patriotic Activities
Schools and educational institutions have been instructed to organize Prabhat Pheris (morning patriotic processions) from 7:00 a.m., followed by seminars, essay-writing competitions, speeches, sports events and cultural performances centered on the spirit of freedom and nation-building.
Officials have also been directed to ensure timely invitations to freedom fighters, statehood activists, public representatives, distinguished guests and eminent citizens.
‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ Campaign to Receive Wider Public Participation
The administration will give a major push to the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign by encouraging extensive public participation.
Tiranga rallies, cycle rallies and awareness drives will be organized at block and Assembly constituency levels to inspire citizens to celebrate Independence Day with enthusiasm and national pride.
The Municipal Corporation has been instructed to undertake special cleanliness drives, beautification and painting around parks, memorials, statues and important public spaces.
Plastic-Free Independence Day Celebrations
The District Magistrate has directed that all Independence Day events be completely plastic-free. The use of single-use plastic and other plastic materials will be prohibited throughout the celebrations, with departments instructed to adopt environmentally sustainable arrangements.
‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ Plantation Drive to Promote Environmental Conservation
Linking patriotism with environmental responsibility, the district administration will undertake a large-scale plantation drive under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (One Tree in Mother’s Name) campaign.
The initiative aims to spread the message of environmental conservation while strengthening the emotional bond between citizens, nature and the nation.
Departments Directed to Ensure Timely Arrangements
The Police Department has been instructed to complete all parade and ceremonial preparations well in advance, while other line departments have been directed to ensure seamless arrangements related to security, healthcare, drinking water, sanitation, electricity and other essential services.
The meeting was attended by Chief Development Officer Abhinav Shah, Superintendent of Police Pramod Kumar, Additional District Magistrate (Administration) Smrita Parmar, City Magistrate Rakesh Tiwari, SDM Aparna, Chief Medical Officer Dr. M.K. Sharma, District Development Officer Sunil Kumar, District Supply Officer K.K. Agrawal, District Education Officer Premlal Bharti, along with senior officials from various departments.
