Dehradun Traffic Master Plan to Target Congestion, 23 Proposed Parking Sites Under Review

Dehradun to Prepare Comprehensive Traffic Management Master Plan to Tackle Congestion

Plan to focus on bypass routes for Mussoorie-bound vehicles, parking facilities, shuttle services and improved road connectivity

DM Dr Ashish Chauhan directs MDDA to coordinate with traffic police, transport officials and town planners to develop short- and long-term solutions

Dehradun, October 28, 2026: The Dehradun district administration is planning a comprehensive strategy to improve traffic management and address the city’s persistent congestion. District Magistrate Dr Ashish Chauhan chaired a review meeting at the Rishiparna Auditorium on Wednesday, discussing road connectivity, junction improvements, parking infrastructure and smoother vehicle movement towards Mussoorie and other major tourist destinations.

The District Magistrate directed the concerned departments to prepare short-term and long-term action plans, taking into account the city’s current requirements, anticipated growth in traffic, the needs of local residents and tourists, and the availability of existing infrastructure.

He emphasised that traffic management measures should provide lasting relief from congestion while ensuring safer and more convenient travel across the city.

Alternative Routes for Mussoorie-Bound Traffic

The meeting placed particular emphasis on reducing traffic pressure within Dehradun caused by vehicles travelling towards Mussoorie and other popular tourist destinations.

The District Magistrate directed officials to examine the feasibility of routes that would allow vehicles to travel around the city rather than pass through congested urban areas unnecessarily.

He also called for a detailed plan to strengthen parking facilities in Mussoorie, develop an effective shuttle service and improve connectivity along essential routes. The assessment will cover the availability of suitable land, potential land parcels, road capacity and other technical requirements related to traffic management.

The administration aims to develop arrangements that can better manage traffic during the tourist season and other peak periods, reduce unnecessary vehicle accumulation on major roads and make travel more convenient for visitors.

Study of Successful Traffic Models in Other Cities

Dr Chauhan directed officials to study traffic management practices adopted in other congested cities and major tourist destinations across the country.

The study will examine parking models, alternative routes and traffic control measures, assessing their suitability for Dehradun’s geographical conditions and local requirements.

The Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) has been directed to prepare a comprehensive traffic management master plan in coordination with the traffic police, transport department and town planners.

The proposed plan will cover road connectivity, junction improvements, parking infrastructure, alternative routes and measures to address congestion at high-pressure locations.

Review of 23 Proposed Parking Sites

During the meeting, officials informed the District Magistrate that an earlier plan had identified 23 locations for proposed parking facilities in Dehradun.

Dr Chauhan directed officials to assess the usefulness and feasibility of each location in relation to the city’s actual parking requirements.

He emphasised that identifying land for parking alone would not be sufficient. Officials must also evaluate whether developing a parking facility at a particular location would genuinely reduce traffic congestion.

The assessment will consider road width, vehicle movement, entry and exit arrangements, land availability, the relationship between parking development and junction improvements, and future traffic requirements.

Detailed Parking Assessment for Dehradun and Mussoorie

Joint Magistrate of Mussoorie Rahul Anand has been directed to submit detailed information on existing and proposed parking facilities in the Mussoorie area. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Sadar) has been asked to provide similar details for Dehradun city.

The information will include the status of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), land availability, feasibility reports for potential land parcels and other relevant technical and administrative details.

This assessment is intended to help officials determine the feasibility and priority of proposed parking projects.

Separate Plans for Immediate and Long-Term Improvements

The District Magistrate directed departments to distinguish between measures that can be implemented immediately and infrastructure projects requiring long-term planning.

Short-term measures will focus on improving traffic operations in congested areas, streamlining junctions and strengthening parking management.

Long-term planning will examine alternative routes, improved road connectivity, additional parking facilities and infrastructure required to meet the city’s future traffic needs.

Dr Chauhan asked all concerned departments to work in coordination and submit practical, effective proposals to improve traffic flow and provide safer, smoother travel for residents and tourists.

The meeting was attended by Mussoorie Joint Magistrate Rahul Anand, Traffic Circle Officer Jagdish Pant and MDDA officials. Other concerned officials participated virtually.
