Dehradun, September 29, 2026: District Magistrate Dr Ashish Chauhan chaired a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee at the Rishiparna Auditorium in the Collectorate on Tuesday. The meeting reviewed measures for preventing road accidents, strengthening safety arrangements at accident-prone locations, installation of road safety signage, repair of faulty street and traffic lights, enforcement against racing in Mussoorie, and repair of roads damaged during the monsoon.

Effective Safety Signage to be Installed at Accident-Prone Locations
The District Magistrate directed officials to identify accident-prone and vulnerable locations across the district and install adequate, clear and effective road safety awareness signage at these locations. The signage will alert motorists about potential hazards and vulnerable stretches in advance.
He specifically directed officials to prioritise road safety measures around the Asharodi Tunnel and other accident-prone locations.
Several safety measures have already been implemented in the Asharodi area. These include 58 signboards, 485 metres of rumble strips, 1,880 metres of median markers and 500 metres of solar studs. Collectively, these measures cover more than 3,000 metres of road safety interventions.

Faulty Street and Traffic Lights to Be Repaired Immediately
The District Magistrate also reviewed the status of non-functional street and traffic lights in the city. He directed the Smart City authorities to undertake immediate maintenance and ensure that faulty lights are made operational.
He stressed that adequate lighting is an important component of road safety, particularly for motorists and pedestrians travelling at night. Officials were instructed to ensure timely repair and regular maintenance of street and traffic lights without negligence.
Strict Action Against Racing in Mussoorie
The issue of racing in the Mussoorie area was also discussed during the meeting. The District Magistrate directed concerned officials to take effective enforcement action, as per rules, against motorists violating road safety regulations.
He also called for stronger monitoring and enforcement on vulnerable and high-traffic routes to prevent dangerous driving and racing-related incidents.
46 Officers Deployed to Inspect 92 Roads
In view of road damage and potholes caused by monsoon conditions and construction activities, the District Magistrate has deployed 46 district-level officers to inspect 92 roads in the Dehradun Municipal Corporation area.
The designated officers will conduct field inspections of their allotted routes and identify potholes, damaged road sections and areas requiring repair or corrective measures.
During the inspections, officials will prepare detailed reports, including photographs of the road conditions. These reports will be shared with the concerned road departments and executing agencies for necessary repairs and corrective action.
The District Magistrate directed all designated officers to complete their field inspections within the prescribed period and submit their reports to the District Disaster Management Authority, Dehradun, within two days.
The reports must clearly document the condition of the roads, identified potholes and damaged sections, along with photographs, so that the concerned departments can take timely corrective action.
Road Infrastructure, Lighting and Signage Integral to Road Safety
Dr Ashish Chauhan said road safety is not limited to compliance with traffic rules. Safe road infrastructure, adequate lighting, effective signage, monitoring, enforcement and timely maintenance are equally important components of a comprehensive road safety system.
He directed all concerned departments to work in coordination and ensure that road safety measures are implemented on priority.
Additional District Magistrate (Administration) Smrita Parmar, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Headquarters Ravindra Jwanta, Police Chief Medical Officer Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma, Circle Officer (Traffic), Superintending Engineer PWD Ompal Singh, Regional Transport Officer Anita Chamola, Executive Engineers PWD Deepak Yadav and Bhrigu Dwivedi, District Disaster Management Officer Rishabh Kumar, and officials from NH, NHAI and other concerned departments were present at the meeting.
