Media plays a vital role in strengthening democracy and highlighting public-interest issues, says Chief Minister

DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami released the Uttarakhand Press Club’s annual souvenir, ‘Guldasta’, at the Chief Minister’s residence on Thursday. He congratulated the office-bearers and journalists associated with the Press Club on the publication and highlighted the important role of journalism in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting public awareness.

Office-bearers and members of the Uttarakhand Press Club, along with journalists representing various media organisations, attended the event.

Congratulating the Press Club, Dhami said that institutional souvenirs serve as an important means of documenting and preserving an organisation’s activities, achievements, ideas and social commitments. He appreciated the effort to bring together different aspects of journalism and present Uttarakhand’s social, cultural and developmental journey through ‘Guldasta’.

The Chief Minister described journalism as an important pillar of democracy. He said the media plays a crucial role not only in informing and educating society but also in bringing public-interest issues to the attention of the government and administration. It also serves as an important channel for communicating government policies, welfare schemes and development initiatives to the public.

He noted that journalists highlight the concerns, achievements and aspirations of different sections of society, helping make democratic institutions stronger and more responsive.

Dhami said journalists have made a significant contribution to Uttarakhand’s journey, from the statehood movement to the formation of the state and its subsequent development. He emphasised that the media has an important role in taking the state’s achievements, local talent, tourism potential, cultural heritage, environmental initiatives and innovations across various sectors to a wider national and international audience.

The Chief Minister added that the state government is working towards development and public welfare with a commitment to ‘Seva, Sushasan and Samarpan’—service, good governance and dedication. The government aims to ensure that development initiatives and welfare programmes reach the most disadvantaged sections of society.

He said the media serves as an important bridge between the government and the public. Positive, impartial and fact-based journalism can raise awareness, strengthen public dialogue and help communicate development initiatives more effectively.

During the programme, Uttarakhand Press Club office-bearers thanked the Chief Minister and shared details about the publication of ‘Guldasta’. They reiterated the club’s commitment to working for journalists’ welfare and addressing issues of wider social concern.
