Silkyara Tunnel Breakthrough in Presence of CM Dhami, Pran Pratishtha Performed at Baba Bauknag Temple

UTTARKASHI: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in the breakthrough ceremony of the Silkyara Tunnel on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in Uttarakhand’s infrastructure and spiritual journey.

This tunnel holds special importance not only for connectivity but also for the Chardham Yatra, as it will significantly enhance travel convenience for pilgrims. The 4.531 km long double-lane tunnel, built at a cost of approximately ₹1,384 crore, will reduce the distance between Gangotri and Yamunotri Dham by 25 km. This reduction will not only save time for travelers but also provide better facilities, boost regional tourism, create employment opportunities, and strengthen the local economy.

A Tunnel of Faith and Engineering

The Silkyara Tunnel gained international attention in 2023 when a sudden landslide during its construction trapped 41 workers inside for 17 days. The rescue operation, described as one of the most complex and prolonged in the world, was successfully executed under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Dhami. The safe evacuation of all workers became a symbol of technical brilliance and human resilience.

On the occasion, CM Dhami congratulated all engineers, workers, technical experts, and rescue teams for their extraordinary effort. “This historic moment is a symbol of our technological strength and unshakeable faith. The Silkyara rescue operation stands as a testament to human endurance, teamwork, and compassion,” he said.

Fulfilling a Sacred Vow

During the rescue operation, CM Dhami had vowed to build a temple for Baba Bauknag, seeking divine intervention for the safe return of the trapped workers. On Wednesday, the Chief Minister also took part in the Pran Pratishtha (consecration) ceremony at the newly built Baba Bauknag Temple, carrying offerings and worship materials from his home in Dehradun.

He expressed his gratitude and said, “When Baba Bauknag was invoked at the tunnel’s entrance, hope was reignited. It was then that the workers were rescued. Today, with the temple’s consecration, my resolution has been fulfilled.”

Key Announcements by CM Dhami:

Silkyara Tunnel to be Named after Baba Bauknag – A proposal will be initiated to rename the tunnel in honor of the deity.

Upgradation of Health Infrastructure – The Primary Health Center at Genwala-Brahmakhal will be upgraded to a Community Health Center.

Development of Bauknag Tibba – This site will be developed as a major tourist destination.

Helipad Construction near Syalna – To improve accessibility and emergency services.

A Collective Prayer, A Collective Victory

CM Dhami recalled that the entire country had prayed for the trapped workers when the incident occurred on November 12, 2023. “In that dark tunnel, where even rays of hope were dim, Baba Bauknag became the beacon of strength for all. The rescue was not just a technical success—it was a spiritual one,” he said.

Union Minister of State Ajay Tamta, MLAs Suresh Chauhan, Durgeshwar Lal, Sanjay Dobhal, NHIDCL Managing Director Dr. Krishna Kumar, District Magistrate Dr. Meherban Singh Bisht, SP Sarita Dobhal, and several other public representatives and officials were present at the event.
