DM Inspects Vulnerable Points on Mussoorie Road, DPR to be Prepared for Permanent Solutions
Dehradun, September 2, 2026: District Magistrate Dr Ashish Chauhan conducted an on-site inspection of vulnerable stretches along Mussoorie Road on Wednesday and reviewed the condition of the road, hill slopes and drainage systems. In view of the recurring risk of landslides, debris flow and road blockages during the monsoon, the DM directed concerned departments to ensure 24-hour monitoring, adequate deployment of machinery and effective inter-departmental coordination.
During the inspection, Dr Chauhan assessed the situation at Paniwala Band, Gluggi and other vulnerable locations, with particular focus on road safety, unstable hill slopes, drainage arrangements and areas prone to landslides. Public Works Department officials were instructed to conduct a detailed technical assessment of the identified vulnerable points.
Scientific and Long-Term Solutions for Repeatedly Affected Areas
The District Magistrate emphasized that areas repeatedly affected by landslides and debris should not rely solely on temporary measures. Instead, scientific and long-term solutions should be developed to address the underlying causes of road disruption.
He directed officials to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for permanent solutions at all identified vulnerable locations. The DPRs should incorporate geological and technical assessments along with measures related to road safety, slope stabilization, debris management, drainage systems, retaining structures, protection works and other necessary safety interventions.
The objective is to minimize road damage and recurring disruptions during the monsoon season.
Immediate Road Clearance in Case of Blockages
The DM instructed officials of the Public Works Department and agencies associated with national highways to work in close coordination. He directed that Mussoorie Road be monitored round the clock during the monsoon and that any blockage caused by landslides or debris be cleared on priority without delay.
Adequate availability of JCBs, Pokland excavators, dumpers and other essential machinery should be ensured at short notice so that road clearance and emergency response operations can begin immediately whenever required.
Focus on Drainage and Slope Protection
Dr Chauhan also stressed the need to keep roadside drainage systems functional. Officials were directed to ensure regular cleaning and maintenance of drains, culverts and underground drainage systems so that rainwater does not damage the road or destabilize hill slopes.
Continuous monitoring of potential landslide zones and debris accumulation points was also ordered. Warning signs, barricading and other road-safety measures are to be kept in proper condition at vulnerable locations.
Control Rooms to Remain Operational Round the Clock
Considering the potential monsoon risks, the DM directed the District Disaster Control Room as well as concerned tehsil and block-level control rooms to remain operational 24×7 and maintain effective coordination.
Revenue teams were instructed to regularly visit their respective areas, assess possible damage caused by heavy rainfall and landslides, and ensure immediate action whenever any incident or damage is reported.
Public Advised to Avoid Vulnerable Areas During Heavy Rain
Dr Ashish Chauhan appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall or adverse weather conditions and venture out only when essential. People were specifically advised to stay away from landslide-prone areas, rivers, streams, seasonal drains and other vulnerable locations.
He cautioned that water flow in such areas can increase suddenly during the monsoon and urged residents and travellers to follow weather warnings and safety advisories issued by the administration.
Joint Magistrate Rahul Anand and officials from the Public Works Department and Revenue Department were present during the inspection.
