Dehradun Schools, Anganwadi Centres to Remain Closed on August 20 Due to Heavy Rain Alert
Dehradun, August 19, 2026: In view of the ongoing heavy rainfall and the Orange Alert issued for Dehradun, the district administration has declared a one-day holiday for all educational institutions from Class 1 to 12 and all Anganwadi centres on August 20, 2026.
The order was issued by District Magistrate and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, Dr. Ashish Chauhan, on Wednesday evening.
According to the latest weather nowcast and forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Dehradun, and alerts issued through the National Disaster Alert Portal under the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Dehradun district until the afternoon of August 20.
The forecast also indicates the possibility of lightning and spells of very intense to extremely intense rainfall in different parts of the district.
Considering the possibility of adverse weather conditions and the risk of untoward incidents, the district administration has taken the decision as a precautionary measure under disaster risk reduction protocols.
All Government and Private Schools to Remain Closed
As per the order, all government, non-government and private schools in Dehradun district offering education from Class 1 to 12 will remain closed on August 20. All Anganwadi centres across the district will also remain closed on the same day.
The administration has taken the decision with the safety of students and children as the top priority, particularly in view of the possibility of intense rainfall, lightning and difficult road conditions.
Officials Directed to Ensure Compliance
The Chief Education Officer, Dehradun, and District Programme Officer, Dehradun, have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the order across all educational institutions and Anganwadi centres.
The district administration has also urged residents to remain alert during the period of heavy rainfall, avoid unnecessary travel and follow official weather and disaster-management advisories.
The administration continues to monitor the weather situation and has advised people to exercise caution in areas vulnerable to waterlogging, landslides and other rain-related incidents.
