Dehradun, October 21, 2026: The Dehradun district administration and Dehradun Municipal Corporation organised a special cleanliness drive under the Swachh Survekshan campaign to strengthen the city’s sanitation system and raise public awareness about cleanliness. Following the Dussehra celebrations, approximately 40 tonnes of waste were collected from Parade Ground, Patel Nagar, the Hindu National School and Inter College area, Race Course and other locations.

Around 10 tonnes of waste were collected from the Parade Ground premises, while approximately 30 tonnes were collected from Patel Nagar, the Hindu National Inter College area and Race Course. The initiative aimed to improve cleanliness at public places and encourage citizens to take greater responsibility for maintaining a clean city.

DM Joins Cleanliness Drive and Encourages Public Participation

Dehradun District Magistrate Dr Ashish Chauhan actively participated in the drive alongside district administration officials, municipal employees and students of Government Girls Inter College (GGIC), Rajpur. By personally collecting waste, he reinforced the message that cleanliness requires collective action.

The District Magistrate said cleanliness is not solely the responsibility of the administration or municipal bodies. Every citizen must contribute to keeping public spaces clean. He urged government officials, residents, educational institutions and social organisations to participate actively in cleanliness initiatives.

He added that the objective of Swachh Survekshan is not limited to cleaning the city. It also aims to develop a sense of responsibility among citizens and encourage lasting behavioural changes. Regular cleaning of public spaces, major roads, markets and other important locations must be accompanied by awareness about proper waste disposal.

Cleanliness Campaign to Continue from Diwali to State Foundation Day

Dr Chauhan said a sustained cleanliness campaign would be conducted across the district from Diwali until Uttarakhand State Foundation Day, keeping the festive season in mind. Special attention will be given to public spaces, major roads and other important locations.

He directed officials to ensure the scientific disposal of all waste collected during the campaign. Biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste must be segregated and processed separately in accordance with prescribed procedures.

The initiative is expected to improve waste management practices and help minimise the adverse environmental impact of improperly disposed waste.

Municipal Bodies to Coordinate on Wider Cleanliness Initiatives

The District Magistrate said the campaign would be expanded through coordinated efforts involving Dehradun Municipal Corporation, Rishikesh Municipal Corporation and other relevant urban local bodies.

Along with special cleanliness drives at public locations, the administration will focus on strengthening routine sanitation services and waste management systems.

He also announced that cleanliness drives would be organised along the Rispana River and at other identified locations. The district administration will work with municipal bodies, relevant departments, social organisations and local residents to ensure continued efforts and lasting improvements in the city’s sanitation system.

Citizens Urged to Segregate Wet and Dry Waste

The District Magistrate appealed to residents not to litter public places and to dispose of waste only at designated locations. He also encouraged households and establishments to develop the habit of separating wet and dry waste.

He emphasised that public participation is essential to making cleanliness initiatives effective and sustainable. Individual efforts, when combined, can help make Dehradun cleaner, more attractive and environmentally responsible.

Officials, municipal employees and students of GGIC Rajpur participated in the drive at Parade Ground. Additional cleanliness activities were carried out around Hindu National School in Lakshman Chowk, Patel Nagar, Race Course and other locations.

Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) K.K. Mishra, Chief Municipal Health Officer Dr Anand Shukla, the principal and students of GGIC Rajpur, Rohit Sadana of the Waste Warriors organisation, and municipal officials and employees were present during the campaign.
