Dehradun, July 28: In a major step towards strengthening the Public Distribution System (PDS) in urban areas, 17 new government fair price (ration) shops have been opened across various localities of Dehradun. These shops have been made operational under the proactive efforts of District Magistrate Savin Bansal, who revived long-pending files in the Food and Civil Supplies Department and initiated the tender process.
For years, no new ration shops had been established in the city due to unexplained delays. As a result, people had to stand in long queues—often under extreme weather conditions—to collect essential commodities from limited outlets. With the opening of these new shops, residents, especially women, the elderly, and economically weaker sections, will now have easier access to essential goods closer to their homes.
Recognizing the growing urban population, the burden on existing ration shops, and the retirement or demise of some existing fair price shop owners, the district administration issued a public notice inviting applications for new shops. Applications were accepted online through the Invest Uttarakhand Portal, and shops were allotted following proper screening and recommendation by the selection committee.
