Dehradun Gets New Leadership: Dr. Ashish Chauhan Takes Charge as District Magistrate

Dehradun district has received new administrative leadership as IAS officer Dr. Ashish Chauhan formally assumed charge as the new District Magistrate (DM) on Monday. Former District Magistrate Savin Bansal has been transferred to the state secretariat following the latest administrative reshuffle announced by the government.
While Savin Bansal received an emotional farewell from officials, employees and citizens after his transfer, the district administration has now been handed over to an officer widely recognized for his people-centric, sensitive and innovation-driven style of governance.
Savin Bansal’s Tenure Marked by Public-Centric Initiatives
Serving as Dehradun DM since September 2024, Savin Bansal made consistent efforts to bring the administration closer to the common people. During his tenure, several impactful initiatives were launched to support underprivileged and vulnerable sections of society.
Among the most appreciated initiatives was the “Nanda-Sunanda” campaign, aimed at securing education and a better future for girl children. The district administration also carried out rehabilitation drives for children involved in begging and rag-picking, focusing on connecting them with mainstream education and providing a safer environment.
Efficient public grievance redressal, timely resolution of complaints, better implementation of welfare schemes and socially sensitive administrative interventions earned Savin Bansal the image of a “People’s Administrator.” As news of his transfer spread, citizens and employees bid him a heartfelt farewell.
Dr. Ashish Chauhan Highlights Administrative Priorities
Before formally assuming office, Dr. Ashish Chauhan inspected the treasury office and reviewed administrative arrangements while interacting with officials and staff members. He emphasized the proper preservation and systematic maintenance of records and also stressed digital verification mechanisms for pensioners.
After taking charge, Dr. Chauhan stated that ensuring transparent and timely delivery of government welfare schemes to the public would remain his top priority.
He further said that strengthening the management of the Char Dham Yatra, ensuring timely execution of disaster management works, accelerating development projects and simplifying the delivery of government schemes to citizens would be key focus areas of the administration.
Vast Experience in Challenging Hill Districts
Dr. Ashish Chauhan, a 2012-batch IAS officer, has previously served as District Magistrate in challenging hill districts including Pithoragarh, Uttarkashi and Pauri. During his tenure in these districts, he was widely appreciated for technology-driven public welfare initiatives, healthcare innovations, road safety measures, public outreach and tourism development projects.
‘Safe Safar App’ Became a Road Safety Model
One of the notable initiatives under his leadership in Pauri was the launch of the “Safe Safar App,” an innovative digital platform developed to improve road safety. The app was introduced for monitoring and registering hired vehicles used during wedding ceremonies and played a significant role in controlling overloading, drunk driving and road accidents.
‘Kavya App’ Strengthened Maternal Healthcare Monitoring
Dr. Chauhan also gained recognition for launching the “Kavya App” in 2023 to monitor high-risk pregnancies. The initiative enabled identification, registration and regular monitoring of high-risk pregnant women, particularly in remote hilly areas where ensuring safe deliveries remains a major challenge. The app proved effective in reducing maternal and infant mortality risks.
Focus on Tourism and Cultural Development
Dr. Chauhan also promoted tourism and cultural development during his tenure. The upcoming “Trishul Park” near the Himalayan Viewpoint in Pauri reflects this vision. Developed to boost religious and nature tourism, the park features a grand 56-foot trident installation, expected to emerge as a major tourist attraction in the coming years.
