District Legal Services Authority Reaches Van Gujjar Community on Sela Festival, Assures Resolution of Civic Issues and Promotes Environmental Conservation

On the auspicious occasion of the traditional Sela Festival, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Dehradun, visited the forest-dwelling Van Gujjar community and participated in their cultural celebrations. The initiative aimed to strengthen legal awareness, address the community’s concerns, and promote environmental conservation through plantation activities.
During the visit, Seema Dungrakoti, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Dehradun, interacted with members of the Van Gujjar community and listened to their grievances. Community members highlighted difficulties in accessing various government welfare schemes due to the lack of essential documents such as Aadhaar cards, birth certificates, and other identity records.
Taking serious note of these concerns, the Secretary assured the community that the issues would be taken up with the concerned government departments and coordinated efforts would be made to ensure timely solutions.
At the request of the District Legal Services Authority, officials from the district administration and the Forest Department also participated in the programme. They assured the community that necessary steps would be taken to address their concerns and improve access to government services.
Extending greetings on the occasion of Sela Festival, Seema Dungrakoti praised the Van Gujjar community for their deep commitment to nature conservation. She said the community’s harmonious relationship with forests and dedication to protecting the environment serve as an inspiration for society.
To reinforce the message of environmental protection, the District Legal Services Authority distributed saplings and tree guards to the community. Officials and community members jointly planted trees and pledged to ensure their proper care and conservation.
As part of its outreach programme, the Authority also distributed solar lamps and umbrellas to Gram Sabha representatives, while stationery kits and refreshments were provided to children, bringing enthusiasm and joy among the young participants.
Addressing the gathering, Seema Dungrakoti said that the mission of the District Legal Services Authority extends beyond providing free legal aid. It also seeks to bridge the gap between marginalized communities and justice by spreading legal awareness, ensuring access to government welfare schemes, and protecting the rights of vulnerable citizens.
She further stated, “The Van Gujjar community are true custodians of nature. The issues raised today will be addressed through coordination with the concerned departments. Equal access to justice and environmental conservation are both our shared responsibilities.”
The programme was attended by elders, women and children from the Van Gujjar community, officials from the administration and Forest Department, Defence Counsel members, and Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs). The event highlighted the District Legal Services Authority’s commitment to inclusive justice, environmental sustainability, and community welfare.
