Uttarakhand Sees Season’s First Snowfall and Rain, Bringing Relief After Prolonged Dry Spell

After a long wait, Uttarakhand witnessed the season’s first spell of widespread rain and snowfall on Friday, marking a significant change in weather across the State. While the plains and lower altitudes received light to moderate rainfall, higher reaches experienced fresh snowfall, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures.

Residents of Dehradun woke up to light rain on Friday morning, which intensified to moderate showers by the afternoon. The adjoining hill stations of Mussoorie and Dhanaulti also witnessed the season’s first snowfall, delighting locals and tourists alike.

According to the State Meteorological Centre, an active western disturbance that intensified late Thursday night triggered snowfall in the higher reaches and rain in the plains and lower hills. Although the system is expected to gradually weaken from Saturday, light to moderate rain and snowfall may continue in isolated areas. Meteorologists have forecast a drop of three to four degrees Celsius in temperatures over the next few days.

Considering the possibility of heavy rain and snowfall, the Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Bageshwar districts for the next 24 hours. Another western disturbance is expected to impact the State between January 25 and 26, with light to moderate rain and snowfall likely in higher altitudes on January 27 and 28.

Overall, the season’s first snowfall has brought both challenges and hope, offering relief from dry conditions while reminding authorities to remain vigilant amid changing weather patterns.
