Dehradun Administration Intensifies Crackdown on Single-Use Plastic Across 100 Wards
50 Sector Officers Deployed for Monitoring; Shops and Commercial Establishments Inspected, Fines Imposed for Violations
Dehradun, September 1, 2026: The Dehradun district administration has intensified its campaign against single-use plastic in compliance with the directions of the Nainital High Court. Under the direction of District Magistrate Dr. Ashish Chauhan, regular monitoring and intensive inspections are being carried out across all 100 wards of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation area.
As part of the campaign, 50 sector officers have been deployed to monitor compliance across the wards. Joint teams of the district administration and Municipal Corporation are inspecting shops and commercial establishments for the storage, sale and use of banned single-use plastic items. Alongside enforcement, officials are also conducting awareness activities among traders and residents.
32 Shops and Establishments Inspected in Turner Road and Bharuwala
In Ward 78 (Turner Road) and Ward 79 (Bharuwala), a team led by the District Information Officer inspected 32 shops and establishments. Banned plastic materials were found at two shops, following which challans of ₹1,000 each were issued.
In Ward 4 (Rajpura), a special enforcement drive was conducted by a team led by District Social Welfare Officer Deepankar Ghildiyal and Sanitary Inspector Rakhi Rawat. Action was taken against 22 shopkeepers, banned plastic materials were seized and a total fine of ₹6,700 was recovered.
Strict Warning Against Storage and Sale of Banned Plastic
During the inspections, officials warned shopkeepers against storing, selling or using banned single-use plastic. Traders were advised to shift to environment-friendly and reusable alternatives to reduce plastic pollution.
The administration has made it clear that challans and fines will continue to be imposed wherever violations of the applicable rules are detected.
Awareness Alongside Enforcement
Officials said that the objective of the campaign is not limited to issuing challans or collecting fines. An equally important aim is to create awareness among traders, shopkeepers and the public about the environmental impact of plastic pollution and the importance of responsible waste management.
The district administration has appealed to residents of Dehradun to avoid single-use plastic and adopt eco-friendly alternatives such as cloth and paper-based products. Public participation, officials said, will be crucial in the effort to make Dehradun cleaner, greener and free from single-use plastic.
