Major Crackdown on Drugs in Dehradun: 208 Cases Registered, 237 Accused Sent to Jail
DM Dr Ashish Chauhan orders strict action against illegal rehabilitation centres; digital dashboard to monitor de-addiction centres across the district
Dehradun, September 2, 2026: The Dehradun district administration has intensified its crackdown on the growing drug network and illegal de-addiction and rehabilitation centres in the district. During a review meeting of the District-Level Narcotics Coordination Committee, District Magistrate Dr Ashish Chauhan directed officials to break the drug supply chain, strengthen surveillance in educational institutions and take immediate action against unregistered rehabilitation centres.
Unregistered de-addiction centre ordered to be sealed
Following a complaint regarding an unregistered de-addiction centre operating in the Mothrowala area, the District Magistrate ordered immediate sealing of the facility.
He directed all Sub-Divisional Magistrates to conduct regular inspections of de-addiction and rehabilitation centres operating in their respective areas and take prompt action against centres violating prescribed norms.
The DM also ordered the development of an online dashboard for centralised monitoring of all de-addiction centres. The digital system will enable officials to monitor the functioning, facilities and compliance status of the centres through a centralised platform.
Surprise inspections and random sampling in colleges
The District Magistrate directed officials to conduct surprise visits to colleges, universities and other higher educational institutions. Random sampling should be carried out in cases where drug use is suspected or considered possible.
He also directed that all students be encouraged to complete the mandatory e-pledge under the anti-drug campaign, while regular awareness workshops on drug abuse prevention should be organised in educational institutions.
The administration has also been directed to ensure extensive publicity of the Anti-Drug Helpline 1933 across educational institutions.
GIS-based mapping of drug hotspots
The police department has been asked to undertake a GIS-based analysis of historical crime data to identify drug-sensitive areas and hotspots across the district.
The DM directed officials to prepare targeted action plans for these locations, with particular emphasis on disrupting both the demand and supply chains of narcotic substances.
He also ordered regular inspections of CCTV systems, medicine registers and stock registers at medical stores.
Action has also been ordered against persons involved in the illegal production and marketing of opium, cannabis and bhang in rural areas, as per law.
Hostels, PGs and coaching centres under surveillance
The administration has decided to strengthen CCTV surveillance at hostels, paying guest accommodations, coaching centres and other vulnerable locations.
The DM also directed strict action against violations involving smoking and alcohol consumption at public places, in accordance with applicable law.
208 NDPS cases registered in 2026, 237 accused sent to jail
According to the police department, 208 cases have been registered under the NDPS Act in Dehradun district so far in 2026, while 237 accused persons have been sent to jail.
To disrupt the demand and supply chain of narcotic substances, action under Section 29 of the NDPS Act has been taken against 40 persons identified in connection with such offences, while four persons have been booked under Section 27A.
58 surprise inspections conducted till July
The Drug Administration Department reported that 58 surprise inspections had been conducted in the district up to July 2026. Drug samples were collected in 15 suspected cases.
Four FIRs were registered in cases related to the manufacture of spurious or adulterated medicines, and two accused persons were arrested.
Rs 132 lakh released for 75-bed government de-addiction centre
The District Social Welfare Officer informed the meeting that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) worth Rs 775.09 lakh has been submitted to the government for construction of a proposed 75-bed government de-addiction centre on 0.4050 hectares of land near the Government Old Age and Disabled Home at Raiwala.
Against the proposed project cost, the Government of India has released the first instalment of Rs 132 lakh to the Directorate.

Sharma, Higher Education Department representative Dr Deepa Mehra Rawat, CO Sadar Akshit Kandari, District Social Welfare Officer Deepankar Ghildiyal, Drug Inspector Vinod Jaguri, District Excise Officer Virendra Kumar Joshi, District Education Officer Prem Lal Bharti, NGO Aasra representative Jasveer Rawat and other members attended the meeting, with some participating virtually.
