DEHRADUN NEWS: Jhanda Mela Begins with Ceremonial Raising of Jhanda Ji

DEHRADUN: The historic Jhanda Mela commenced on Wednesday with the ceremonial raising of a new sacred flagpole (Jhanda Ji) at the Darbar Sahib. The event was marked by devotional Bhajans sung by the Sangat (devotees), creating a spiritual ambiance. A large number of devotees from across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and other states gathered to witness the grand occasion.

Following traditional rituals, the old flagpole was taken down, and the new Jhanda Ji was raised under the guidance of Mahant Devendra Das at precisely 4:19 PM. This sacred moment also signified the official beginning of the Jhanda Mela. Prior to the hoisting, the holy mast underwent a purification ritual with honey, ghee, butter, curd, and Gangajal. Devotees carefully wrapped the 90-ft-high flagpole with a plain Gilaf, ensuring it never touched the ground.

According to the Jhanda Mela organizing committee, the sacred pole was wrapped with 41 plain Gilaaf (cloth covers) in the innermost section, 21 in the middle section, and the final cover, known as the Darshani Gilaaf. Adding to the spiritual significance, devotees witnessed the appearance of an eagle, traditionally considered an auspicious sign during the celebration. The raising of the new flagpole was broadcast live on five LED screens, allowing more people to participate in the event remotely.

Addressing the devotees, Mahant Devendra Das emphasized that the Jhanda Mela promotes love, harmony, compassion, and peace. “Lakhs of people come with faith, believing that bowing before Shri Jhanda Ji leads to the fulfillment of their wishes,” he said.

As part of the sacred observances, devotees also took a holy dip in the pond located on the premises of Darbar Sahib, seeking divine blessings and spiritual purification.
