DEHRADUN: Surgery is a Duty, Not a Choice for Doctors: Savin Bansal

Dehradun: District Magistrate Savin Bansal has taken a firm stance on the declining number of surgeries being performed in government hospitals across the district. During a comprehensive review of health services on Thursday, he emphasized that performing surgeries is not a matter of personal discretion for doctors but a professional obligation.

“When adequate resources, skilled doctors, and proper equipment are available, there is no justification for negligence in conducting surgeries,” said Bansal. “We are all supported by public funds, and it is our responsibility to serve the people with honesty and dedication.”

The DM visited District Hospital Coronation, Sub District Hospital Rishikesh, and the hospitals at Vikasnagar and Premnagar to assess the performance of specialist doctors. He expressed dissatisfaction with the low number of surgeries, calling the situation unacceptable despite sufficient infrastructure.

To address this, he has issued strict instructions for all government hospitals to double the number of operations and surgeries by May 15. He warned that failure to meet this target would invite administrative action within the limits of his authority.

Currently, Premnagar Hospital has reported 723 operations, including 205 major surgeries, while Vikasnagar has conducted 426 operations, of which 219 were major. The DM termed these figures “far from satisfactory” and called for immediate improvement.

In addition, all hospitals have been directed to submit detailed reports including the number of admitted patients, normal and cesarean deliveries, surgeries performed, and reasons for patient referrals.

This decisive move by DM Bansal is being viewed as a significant step toward enhancing transparency and accountability in public healthcare services.
