Uttarkashi, Dharali Tragedy: Relief and Rescue Operations Underway on War Footing; Helpline Numbers Released

Dehradun – A massive cloudburst struck the Kheer Gadh area in Dharali, under Bhatwadi tehsil of Uttarkashi district, at approximately 1:50 PM on Tuesday, leading to widespread destruction. The sudden surge in water brought heavy debris into the Dharali market area, causing severe damage to several buildings, hotels, and shops.

In response, relief and rescue operations have been launched on a war footing. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire Department, Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), local police, and administrative teams were immediately mobilized upon receiving the alert.

To reinforce ground efforts, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has dispatched 50 personnel from Delhi and 15 from Dehradun. Additionally, 75 SDRF personnel and 30 ITBP members have also been deployed to the affected site.

Chief Secretary R.K. Sudhanshu has briefed both the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Home Affairs. Top officials including Director General of Police Deepam Seth, Home Secretary Shailesh Bagauli, and Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey are overseeing the ongoing operations from the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) in Dehradun. Meanwhile, the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police, Uttarkashi, are en route to the disaster zone.

Medical and Emergency Preparedness

The nearest hospital is located 5 km from the site, while the district hospital is 88 km away and AIIMS Dehradun is 246 km. All nearby hospitals have been placed on high alert with beds reserved for potential casualties. Ambulance services are active, and additional beds have been made available at AIIMS Rishikesh and Doon Hospital.

Air Relief Operations and Equipment

The SEOC has requested two MI helicopters and one Chinook from the Indian Air Force. Additionally, two helicopters of UCADA have been kept on standby. Airborne relief will commence once weather conditions permit.

The SDRF has deployed advanced equipment to the site, including victim location cameras, thermal imaging devices, drones, and essential medical supplies. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Public Works Department have been instructed to clear access routes urgently. However, adverse weather and road blockages continue to pose logistical challenges.
