Chief Secretary Reviews Preparations for Kumbh Mela 2027, Directs Timely Completion of All Works

The Uttarakhand government has intensified preparations for the upcoming Kumbh Mela 2027. In this regard, Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan visited Haridwar on Thursday and chaired a high-level review meeting at the Mela Control Building.
During the meeting, he reviewed the progress of various ongoing and proposed works with officials from multiple departments. He also held discussions with representatives of social and trade organizations to seek suggestions and ensure better coordination.
The Chief Secretary emphasized that all arrangements must be completed within the stipulated timeline to ensure a grand, divine, and well-organized event. He warned that any negligence or delay would be taken seriously.
Focus on Infrastructure and Sewer Projects
Giving top priority to sewer line construction works in Haridwar, he directed officials to immediately repair roads that have been dug up. He instructed that work on Upper Road be completed within a week, while all remaining works should be finished by June 30.
A monitoring committee comprising the Additional District Magistrate, Additional Mela Officer, and Project Manager has been tasked with daily supervision. The District Magistrate has been directed to submit an inspection report by April 10.
Special Emphasis on Ganga Cleanliness
The Chief Secretary stressed maintaining the cleanliness and uninterrupted flow of the Ganga River. He directed that under no circumstances should sewage or polluted water enter the river.
Officials were instructed to connect all drains to the sewer network and submit inspection reports along with videography.
Gas, Electricity, and Basic Facilities
To address cooking gas issues, instructions were given to organize camps for PNG (Piped Natural Gas) connections. Ashrams, dharamshalas, hotels, and commercial establishments have been asked to submit applications within a week.
He also directed officials to ensure prompt repair of underground electricity lines, removal of poles where necessary, and proper installation of distribution boxes.
Safety at Ghats and Temple Routes
To strengthen safety at ghats, he instructed regular police patrolling, adequate lighting, and installation of CCTV cameras.
Additionally, he directed timely completion of improvement works on the routes leading to Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples.
Key Decisions on Healthcare Facilities
Reviewing health arrangements, the Chief Secretary instructed that the construction of Haridwar Medical College be completed at the earliest and its infrastructure made operational.
He also directed ensuring 3 MW power supply within 15 days and construction of a new power line. Deployment of advanced life support ambulances and boat ambulances during the Mela was also discussed.
Traffic and Parking Plan Under Review
Officials were directed to gather suggestions from stakeholders regarding the traffic and parking plan for Kumbh Mela 2027. The final plan will be prepared at the divisional level and submitted for approval, ensuring convenience and smooth movement for pilgrims.
Progress Update
Mela Officer Sonika informed that 36 permanent and 19 temporary works have been approved so far, and a detailed sector plan for 32 sectors has been prepared. A special monitoring system has been put in place to ensure quality and timely execution.
Appeal for Public Cooperation
Prior to the meeting, the Chief Secretary interacted with representatives of Ganga Sabha, trade bodies, ashrams, hotels, transport unions, and sanitation workers. He appealed to all stakeholders to actively cooperate in making Kumbh Mela 2027 a successful and well-organized event.
