Dehradun, 1 April: In a significant step towards ensuring access to justice, the District Magistrate’s Office in Dehradun has introduced free legal assistance for economically weaker sections of society. This marks the first time that legal aid, including government-appointed lawyers, will be available directly through the DM’s office.
Recognizing the urgent need for legal guidance among underprivileged citizens, District Magistrate Savin Bansal has set up a dedicated Legal Aid Centre within his office. Responding to his request, the Secretary of the Legal Services Authority has assigned two paralegal volunteers who will be available every Monday on a rotational basis.
This initiative aims to provide much-needed relief to individuals facing legal challenges, particularly those with cases pending in the High Court. A large number of poor and uneducated citizens attend the Janta Darshan programme held every Monday to seek redressal for their grievances. Now, in addition to administrative solutions, they will also receive free legal guidance to help them navigate court procedures and legal formalities.
By offering this service, the district administration seeks to empower vulnerable sections of society by educating them about their legal rights and responsibilities. This step will not only help them secure constitutional protections but also enable them to lead a life of dignity. Authorities hope that this initiative will serve as a milestone in expanding legal access for those in need, ensuring that financial constraints do not become a barrier to justice.
