MoU Signed for Acquisition of Naini Saini Airport, Pithoragarh in Presence of Prime Minister Modi

DEHRADUN: A landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Sunday between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Government of Uttarakhand for the acquisition and development of Naini Saini Airport in Pithoragarh. The agreement, formalized in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marks a decisive step toward strengthening air connectivity in Uttarakhand’s remote Himalayan belt.

Spanning nearly 70 acres, Naini Saini Airport currently features a terminal building capable of handling 40 passengers during peak hours. Its apron can simultaneously accommodate two Code 2B aircraft. With the acquisition now in place, the airport is set to undergo a major upgrade that will modernize infrastructure, enhance safety and operational efficiency, and significantly expand regional connectivity.

The comprehensive development plan is expected to boost multiple sectors across the state. Improved air access will give strong momentum to local art, cultural heritage, and tourism while opening new avenues in trade, pilgrimage travel, higher education, healthcare, and hospitality. The project is also poised to generate fresh employment opportunities for the youth of the region.

The initiative aligns closely with Prime Minister Modi’s vision for accessible, resilient, and sustainable aviation infrastructure across India. In addition to civilian benefits, the upgraded facility will strengthen disaster response and emergency management capabilities in this strategically sensitive Himalayan district.

This MoU is anticipated to become a transformative milestone that accelerates Uttarakhand’s journey toward inclusive development and elevated national connectivity.
