New Year Road Safety Drive: Transport Department Checks 830 Vehicles, 25 Drunk Drivers Arrested

Transport Department Launches Special Enforcement Drive to Ensure Road Safety During New Year

To ensure the safety of tourists and the general public during the New Year celebrations and to effectively control road accidents, the Transport Department conducted a special enforcement drive against over-speeding and drunk driving across the state.

Under this special अभियान, a total of 830 vehicles and drivers were checked in the districts of Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri, and Uttarkashi. During the checks, 227 vehicles were challaned for over-speeding. In cases of drunk driving, 25 drivers were arrested and handed over to the police, while the concerned vehicles were challaned and seized as per rules.

Keeping passenger safety as the top priority, the fitness certificates of two buses were cancelled after their mechanical and physical conditions were found to be unsatisfactory.

RTO (Enforcement) Dr. Anita Chamola stated that action for cancellation of driving licenses of drunk drivers will also be taken as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. She emphasized that there will be zero tolerance towards violations that endanger road safety.

The maximum enforcement action was taken in Haridwar district, where:

  • 285 vehicles were checked

  • 14 cases of drunk driving were detected

  • 71 challans were issued for over-speeding

Details of enforcement action in other areas are as follows:

  • Roorkee: 161 vehicles checked, 08 cases of drunk driving, 47 over-speeding challans

  • Rishikesh: 251 vehicles checked, 01 case of drunk driving, 30 over-speeding challans

  • Dehradun: 51 vehicles checked, 18 over-speeding challans

  • Vikas Nagar: 31 vehicles checked, 01 case of drunk driving

  • Tehri: 33 vehicles checked, 01 case of drunk driving, 17 over-speeding challans

  • Uttarkashi: 15 cases of over-speeding action taken

The Transport Department has reiterated that such intensive enforcement drives will continue in the future to strengthen road safety, curb traffic violations, and ensure safe travel for all citizens and tourists.
