Shelter Denied to Divyang Girls: DM Orders High-Level Probe into Renowned Welfare Institutions

Dehradun, May 13, 2025 – Several reputed institutions in Dehradun district, registered for the welfare of Divyang (specially-abled) individuals, have come under serious scrutiny for allegedly failing to provide shelter and support to mentally disabled and helpless girls during times of urgent need.

Taking serious note of the matter, District Magistrate Savin Bansal has formed a high-level investigation committee tasked with conducting a detailed probe on ten key points. The committee has been directed to submit its findings within a fixed time frame. The DM has issued a stern warning that any institution found in violation of established norms may face cancellation of its registration.

Preliminary information and complaints received at the DM’s office suggest that many institutions—despite receiving substantial government and foreign funding for the care, education, and rehabilitation of Divyang children—are denying admission to those in need. Additionally, facilities and resources shown during registration are reportedly not available in practice.

“A signature that enables these institutions to receive crores in funding can also halt their operations if misused,” DM Bansal stated. “No one will be allowed to run a business in the name of human service.”

He further directed the Social Welfare Department and the District Probation Officer to ensure their role goes beyond mere recommendations and approvals. “The lives of hundreds of vulnerable children depend on the integrity of these officials. Any negligence will be dealt with strictly,” he added.
