Tehri Medical College to Transform Healthcare Services in the Hills: Health Minister Subodh Uniyal
Dehradun, July 24, 2026: The Uttarakhand government has accelerated plans for the establishment of the proposed Tehri Medical College, aiming to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and medical education in the region. On Friday, Health Minister Subodh Uniyal chaired a high-level meeting at the Secretariat to review various aspects of the project, including land selection, infrastructure planning, and the implementation roadmap.
During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on the proposed site for the medical college, construction planning, and measures to ensure the timely execution of the project.
Addressing officials, Health Minister Subodh Uniyal said the government is committed to providing modern and quality healthcare services to the people of Tehri and the surrounding hill districts. He emphasized that the medical college should be established at a location that would maximize accessibility and benefit the largest possible population while also allowing scope for future expansion.
“The proposed Tehri Medical College will not only serve as an institution for medical education but will also become a major healthcare hub for the region,” the minister said. He added that the institution would significantly improve access to specialized healthcare, advanced diagnostic facilities, emergency medical services, and quality treatment, reducing the need for patients to travel to Dehradun and other major cities for medical care.
The Health Minister further stated that the medical college would strengthen Uttarakhand’s medical education ecosystem by creating new opportunities for aspiring doctors and healthcare professionals. It is also expected to generate substantial employment and self-employment opportunities for local youth, including positions for doctors, nursing staff, paramedics, technicians, and support personnel. In addition, the project is likely to stimulate economic activity through increased demand for transportation, housing, hospitality, and other allied services.
Uniyal directed officials to ensure that the medical college is developed under a comprehensive master plan equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure. The proposed campus will include a modern teaching hospital, academic blocks, advanced laboratories, student hostels, residential facilities, and all essential healthcare and educational infrastructure.
Officials informed the meeting that the process of identifying and selecting land for the medical college has been completed. The Health Minister expressed confidence that the project would move forward within the stipulated timeline and would become a milestone in strengthening healthcare services and medical education in Uttarakhand.
During the meeting, Health Secretary Vinay Shankar Pandey instructed the Tehri District Magistrate to submit the proposal related to the selected land to the state government at the earliest so that administrative approvals and project implementation could be expedited.
Additional Secretary Rohit Meena and other senior officials of the Health Department were also present at the meeting.
