Rudraprayag: Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Asha Nautiyal emerged victorious by defeating her congress rival Manoj Rawat by a margin of 5,622 votes. She secured 23,814 votes while congress candidate Manoj Rawat got 18,192 votes in the bypoll.
BJP candidate Asha Nautiyal managed to comfortably defeat Congress candidate Manoj Rawat in the Kedarnath Assembly byelection on 23 November, Saturday, thus retaining the seat for her party in a high stake byelection.
The victory of Nautiyal has come as a major relief for the ruling BJP and chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. After losing the Assembly byelections of Manglaur and Badrinath and Badrinath in July this year, the BJP and Dhami were under more pressure to retain the Kedarnath seat.
However, independent Tribuan Singh surprised the political analysts by managing to secure more than 9300 votes. It may be recalled that polling on this seat was held on 20 November. The bypoll on this seat had been necessitated due to death of incumbent MLA Shaila Rani Rawat (BJP), in July this year.
