UTTARAKHAND NEWS: Major accident due to avalanche, rescue continues

Due to continuous snowfall, roads are getting blocked at many places.

57 labourers engaged in clearing snow from road for army movement on Mana Ghastauli road have been affected due to avalanche following glacier break near Mana in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. After the accident, Army, ITBP, SDRF and Border Roads Organisation started rescue operation.

According to the latest information received from the Disaster Management Department, relief and rescue operations are going on on war footing to evacuate people trapped in avalanche 6 km ahead of Badrinath Dham in Chamoli district. Till 5:00 PM, 32 people have been evacuated safely, operation to evacuate remaining 25 people is in progress.

Chamoli. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today reached the State Emergency Operations Center, IT Park Dehradun and held a meeting with the officials regarding the avalanche near Mana village of Chamoli district and directed to expedite the rescue operation after the avalanche. He also took complete information about the condition of the avalanche. 

The Chief Minister, while instructing the officials to reach the spot as soon as possible, said that the helipad located closest to the spot should be opened as soon as possible. So that the rescue operation can be expedited. The Chief Minister directed to keep an eye on the spot through drones. He said that the rescue should be expedited by taking the help of helicopter in the rescue operation. He also directed to bring all the injured to AIIMS Rishikesh through air ambulance if needed. He also directed to provide all possible help to them by constantly coordinating with the district administration. 

While talking to the media, CM Dhami told that relief and rescue work is going on continuously after the avalanche in Chamoli district. ITBP, Army, District Administration, Air Force, everyone is involved in rescue work. Continuous talks are going on with everyone. Due to lack of visibility, it is not possible for helicopters to go at present. Snow experts are being used in this regard. ITBP people are working specially at the site of the incident. He said that our first priority is to evacuate the workers safely. All the people are from different places, for which helpline numbers are also being issued.

CM Dhami said that the state government is in constant touch with the central government. The Prime Minister’s Office, Home Minister, Defense Minister are also being contacted continuously. He said that if any agency is needed in the rescue operation, their help will be taken. The Chief Minister said that 10 people have been taken to the ITBP hospital. Snowfall continues, the road is getting blocked at many places. The weather is likely to clear tomorrow, which will also speed up the rescue operation. All rescue teams are working in coordination with each other. He said that Mana helipad is also being activated. Along with this, all preparations have been completed in AIIMS Rishikesh, Srinagar Medical College, District Hospital Gopeshwar. 

The Chief Minister took complete information about the incident from District Magistrate Chamoli Sandeep Tiwari connected through virtual medium. The District Magistrate said that information about avalanche was received near the Border Roads Organization between Mana village and Mana Pass. Information was received about the workers removing snow from the road for the movement of the army near the incident site. After which, along with the army, rescue teams of ITBP, NDRF, SDRF have been sent to the spot. 

Chief Secretary Radha Raturi, Principal Secretary RK Sudhanshu, Secretary Shailesh Bagauli, Vinod Kumar Suman, Vinay Shankar Pandey, and other officers were present on this occasion.
