Uttarakhand on Alert as IMD Forecasts Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall from August 14 to 17
Dehradun: Uttarakhand has been placed on alert mode in view of the possibility of intense rainfall across the state over the next four days. Following the weather forecast and warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Meteorological Centre, Dehradun, on August 13, 2026, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) has issued directions to all districts to strengthen preparedness and take necessary precautionary measures.
The forecast indicates the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and intense to extremely intense spells of rain between August 14 and 17. Authorities have been instructed to maintain special vigilance in vulnerable areas prone to landslides, road blockages, waterlogging and sudden rises in the levels of rivers and streams.
Authorities Directed to Remain on High Alert
Secretary, Disaster Management and Rehabilitation, Vinod Kumar Suman, has directed all District Magistrates and concerned departments to remain on alert in accordance with the IMD warning.
Officials have been asked to maintain continuous surveillance in vulnerable areas and ensure that all necessary arrangements for relief and rescue operations are in place in advance. Departments have also been directed to maintain close coordination and respond promptly to any emergency situation.
August 14: Orange Alert in Four Districts
On August 14, an Orange Alert has been issued for Dehradun, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar and Nainital. These districts may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, along with thunderstorms, lightning and intense to extremely intense spells of rain.
Champawat, Tehri, Pauri, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar are likely to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places and will remain under a Yellow Alert. The remaining districts are also likely to witness intense to very intense spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms.
August 15: Yellow Alert Across Uttarakhand
On August 15, all districts of Uttarakhand will remain under a Yellow Alert. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Champawat and Bageshwar.
Hill districts may witness thunderstorms, lightning and intense to very intense spells of rainfall. Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar may also experience thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places.
August 16: Orange Alert for Champawat, Bageshwar and Nainital
On August 16, an Orange Alert has been issued for Champawat, Bageshwar and Nainital, where heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning, along with intense to extremely intense spells of rain, are likely at isolated places.
Heavy rainfall is also possible in Dehradun, Tehri, Haridwar, Chamoli, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora and Pithoragarh. A Yellow Alert will remain in place for several districts, including Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Haridwar, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora and Pithoragarh, due to the possibility of intense to very intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.
August 17: Orange Alert for Dehradun and Tehri
On August 17, Dehradun and Tehri will remain under an Orange Alert. Heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and intense to extremely intense spells of rain are likely at isolated places in these two districts.
The remaining districts will remain under a Yellow Alert due to the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places and intense to very intense spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms.
Secretary Appeals to Public to Check Weather Before Travelling
Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman has appealed to the public to take the weather warning seriously and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions. People have been advised to check the latest weather forecast and local advisories before undertaking any journey.
Residents and tourists have been urged to stay away from landslide- and rockfall-prone mountainous areas, rivers, streams and other water channels. In case of heavy rainfall or flash flooding, people should move to safer locations and should never attempt to cross an active landslide zone.
During lightning activity, people should avoid open spaces and standing under trees and instead take shelter inside a safe, permanent building. Swimming, boating or entering swollen rivers, streams and drains during heavy rainfall should also be strictly avoided.
The Disaster Management Department has warned that adverse weather conditions may lead to landslides, road blockages, waterlogging and sudden rises in river and stream levels. Citizens have therefore been urged to remain vigilant, avoid vulnerable locations and follow all advisories issued by the local administration.
