Uttarakhand Weather Alert: Orange Alert for Bageshwar and Pithoragarh, Heavy Rain Likely in Several Districts

Amid continued monsoon activity, several districts of Uttarakhand are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days. Based on the forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Dehradun, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) has directed all District Magistrates to remain alert and ensure necessary safety and disaster-management arrangements.

According to the IMD forecast issued at 9:49 AM on August 29, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Bageshwar and Pithoragarh on August 29, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and spells of very intense to extremely intense rainfall. An Orange Alert has been issued for both districts.

Meanwhile, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Rudraprayag, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar are likely to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places. Thunderstorms, lightning and intense to very intense spells of rain are also possible in other parts of the state, for which a Yellow Alert has been issued.

Orange Alert for Four Districts on August 31

The weather department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Dehradun, Bageshwar, Chamoli and Nainital on August 31. Thunderstorms, lightning and very intense to extremely intense spells of rainfall are also likely, prompting an Orange Alert for these districts.

Heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated places in Tehri, Pauri, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, Uttarkashi, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar. Other districts may experience thunderstorms, lightning and intense to very intense spells of rain.

Dehradun and Tehri Under Orange Alert on September 1

On September 1, 2026, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Dehradun and Tehri, along with thunderstorms, lightning and very intense to extremely intense spells of rainfall. An Orange Alert has been issued for both districts.

Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in Pauri, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Nainital and Haridwar, while other districts may experience thunderstorms, lightning and intense to very intense spells of rain.

No Trekking During Heavy Rainfall Period

In view of the adverse weather conditions, the SEOC has directed authorities in the hill districts not to permit trekking activities during the period of heavy rainfall, in order to minimise the risk to trekkers.

Authorities have also been instructed to regulate movement and exercise additional caution in high-altitude areas. During warnings of abnormal weather and heavy rainfall, tourists should not be permitted to travel to vulnerable high Himalayan areas.

Disaster Management System to Remain on High Alert

All designated officers under the Incident Response System (IRS) and departmental nodal officers have been directed to remain on high alert.

Police stations and outposts have also been instructed to remain prepared with disaster-response equipment and wireless communication systems. Officials and employees have been directed to ensure that their mobile phones and other communication systems remain operational throughout the alert period.

The administration has further advised officials to keep essential equipment such as raincoats, umbrellas, torches and helmets in their vehicles for use during emergencies.

Immediate Restoration of Blocked Roads Ordered

In case of disruption to roads due to heavy rainfall, agencies including National Highways, PWD, PMGSY, ADB, BRO, WB and CPWD have been directed to take immediate steps to restore connectivity.

Revenue Sub-Inspectors, Village Development Officers and Village Panchayat Officers have also been instructed to remain present in their respective areas and closely monitor the situation.

Food and Medical Arrangements for Stranded People

District authorities have been directed to ensure food supplies and medical assistance if people become stranded due to adverse weather or road blockages.

Schools have also been advised to take necessary precautionary measures keeping the safety of students in mind.

In urban and semi-urban areas, authorities have been instructed to clear blockages from drains and culverts to minimise the risk of waterlogging and flooding.

Public to be Kept Informed About Weather Warnings

District Information Officers have been directed to disseminate weather warnings and safety advisories to the general public through visual and print media, enabling residents and visitors to take necessary precautions.

People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall and to strictly follow weather and safety advisories issued by the administration.

Report Emergencies Immediately

The SEOC has directed all concerned officials to immediately report any disaster or emergency to the State Emergency Operation Centre/State Disaster Control Room.
