Amid the devastating disaster in Dharali, Uttarkashi, a daughter’s innocent wish turned into a lifesaver for her entire family. Jahnavi Panwar, who had come to take admission in Graphic Era Deemed University, insisted that her parents accompany her — a decision that ultimately saved them from the Dharali tragedy. Now, Graphic Era University has announced that Jahnavi’s entire education will be free of cost.
Jahnavi Panwar’s family from Dharali lived a happy and prosperous life. Her father, Jai Bhagwan Singh Panwar, owned a 40-room hotel, a house, and an apple orchard. This year, after passing Class 12, Jahnavi came to Dehradun’s Graphic Era Deemed University to take admission in B.A. (Hons).
During the admission process, she urged her parents to accompany her to the university. To make their daughter happy, they agreed and travelled to Dehradun. Coincidentally, during that time, a disaster struck Dharali, completely destroying their hotel, home, and orchard — but the family was safe.
When the incident came to light through a major news channel, Dr. Kamal Ghanshala, Chairman of Graphic Era Group of Institutions, spoke to Jahnavi’s father over the phone, expressed his condolences, and announced that Jahnavi would not be charged any fees for any semester.
Dr. Ghanshala also said that if details of other children from families affected by the Dharali tragedy are received, the university would consider providing them free education as well.
Dr. Kamal Ghanshala is known for standing by people during disasters—
Actively participated in relief operations during the 2012 Uttarkashi and 2013 Kedarnath tragedies.
Provided free education from B.Tech to PhD to several students affected by the Joshimath disaster.
Built a house for an elderly woman who lost her home in the Reni (Joshimath) disaster.
Teachers and students praised Dr. Ghanshala’s gesture, saying his decision is not only inspiring but also a reminder that being a good human being is just as important as professional success.
