DEHRADUN: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presence at the main Silver Jubilee celebration in Dehradun on Sunday turned into a vibrant showcase of Uttarakhand’s cultural soul. From his attire to his language, every element of the Prime Minister’s style radiated pure Pahadi identity.

Wearing a traditional Pahadi cap, the Prime Minister delivered one of the most culturally rooted speeches of his Uttarakhand visits to date. While he has occasionally used local dialects in past events, Modi surprised the audience this time by speaking more Garhwali and Kumaoni than ever before, weaving the regional expressions seamlessly throughout his address. This cultural warmth created an emotional wave across the gathering, strengthening Uttarakhand’s sense of affinity with him.

Modi opened his address in his familiar, affectionate tone: “My brothers, sisters, gullible people, wise men of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand, my greetings to all of you.” He added the local greetings “Pailaag” and “Sainwa Saunli,” instantly electrifying the audience. Midway through his speech, he again shifted into Garhwali, saying, “First climb the mountain, the path to development was stopped. Now new paths have started opening up,” drawing loud applause.

Reflecting Uttarakhand’s cultural richness, the Prime Minister highlighted the state’s traditional festivals and age-old mountain customs. From Harela and Phuldei to Bhitoli, Nanda Devi Raj Jaat, Jauljibi and Devidhura fairs, he paid homage to the vibrant heritage that binds the hills together. He also mentioned the famous Butter Festival of Dayara Bugyal, adding a nostalgic touch for the people of the region.

Modi’s deep cultural connect, his repeated use of Garhwali-Kumaoni, and his acknowledgment of local traditions transformed the stage into a celebration of Uttarakhand’s identity. For many, it was a rare moment where the Prime Minister’s words resonated like those of a true son of the mountains.
