Dehradun, March 31, 2026.
In a significant boost to Uttarakhand’s road infrastructure, the Government of India has approved the construction of a 4-lane Rishikesh Bypass. The project has received technical, administrative, and financial clearance worth ₹1105.79 crore from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, following consistent efforts and strong advocacy by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
The long-awaited project will be developed on National Highway-7, stretching from Teenpani Flyover (Km 529.750) to Kharasrote Bridge (Km 542.420). The 12.67-kilometer bypass will pass through Bhattowala and Dhalwala villages and will be executed under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) mode.
Expressing satisfaction over the approval, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that the state government is committed to strengthening road connectivity across Uttarakhand. He emphasized that the completion of this project will significantly reduce traffic congestion in Rishikesh and provide long-term relief from frequent traffic jams.
He said, “The Rishikesh Bypass project is a crucial step towards holistic development and improved connectivity in Uttarakhand. It will not only benefit local residents but also provide a major boost to Char Dham Yatra and tourism activities in the region.”
According to the ministry, the project was initially estimated at ₹1151.18 crore, later revised to ₹1139.40 crore, and finally approved at ₹1105.79 crore. The project is scheduled to be completed within three years, with strict adherence to timelines and no provision for cost or time escalation.
Tenders for the project will be invited through an e-tendering process, and all construction activities will follow prescribed standards and guidelines. The expenditure will be covered under the Government Budgetary Support (GBS) for the financial year 2025–26. A regional officer based in Dehradun has been designated as the Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO) for the project.
Once completed, the bypass is expected to streamline traffic movement in Rishikesh, reduce congestion significantly, and accelerate economic growth and tourism development in the state.
