Dehradun administration cancels registration of 17 illegal homestays during Operation Safai. Action taken against rule violations, illegal activities, and safety lapses. More inspections underway.
Dehradun | April 29, 2026
In a major crackdown to strengthen law and order and ensure public safety, the district administration has launched a strict अभियान against illegally operated homestays. Acting on the directions of District Magistrate Savin Bansal, authorities have cancelled the registration of 17 homestays in the first phase and initiated their removal from the official tourism website.
Investigations revealed that several homestays were being run like commercial hotels. Many were involved in unlawful activities such as late-night bar operations, loud DJ parties, and substance abuse. Some locations had reportedly turned into hubs for unruly elements, creating serious safety concerns for local residents.
Swift Action in Just 7 Days
Within a week, the administration constituted five magistrate-led teams to conduct intensive inspections across urban areas of Sahaspur and Raipur blocks. The drive exposed widespread violations, leading to action against 17 non-compliant homestays.
Authorities uncovered several serious irregularities, including:
- Absence of basic kitchen facilities
- Lack of valid fire safety equipment
- Operation without food licenses
- Exceeding permitted room capacity
- Properties being run on lease without owner presence
- Failure to report foreign guests (C-Form compliance)
- Use of homestays for commercial events like parties and weddings
DM Issues Strong Warning
District Magistrate Savin Bansal emphasized that the core objective of the homestay scheme is to promote local culture and generate income for residents—not to operate as commercial hotels or centers of illegal activity. He stated, “No one is above the law. Public safety is non-negotiable, and strict action will continue against violators.”
The administration has made it clear that this is just the beginning. Further inspections are underway, and any homestay found violating regulations will face strict action. All operators have been directed to comply fully with prescribed norms and guidelines.
