DEHRADUN: Former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and former Union Cabinet Minister Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri passed away on Tuesday at the age of 91 after a prolonged illness. Popularly known as Major General (Retd.) B.C. Khanduri, he had been undergoing treatment for some time and breathed his last at a hospital, leaving behind a legacy of honesty, discipline, and dedicated public service.
A decorated Army officer turned politician, Khanduri was widely respected for his clean image and administrative efficiency. He served as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand twice — first from 2007 to 2009 and later from 2011 to 2012. During his tenure, he focused on infrastructure development, transparent governance, road connectivity, and strengthening administrative systems in the hill state.
Before leading Uttarakhand, Khanduri held key responsibilities in the Union Government. He served as the Union Minister for Surface Transport in the government led by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, where he played a significant role in expanding India’s road infrastructure and national highway network. His contribution to road development projects earned him nationwide recognition.
Born in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal region, Major General (Retd.) B.C. Khanduri began his career in the Indian Army and later entered public life with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Throughout his political journey, he remained known for his disciplined leadership style, integrity, and commitment to public welfare.
Leaders from across the political spectrum, social organizations, and citizens have expressed deep grief over his demise and paid tribute to his contribution to Uttarakhand and the nation. His passing is being seen as the end of an era in Uttarakhand politics.
