Heatwave Conditions Likely in Uttarakhand, Temperature May Cross 40°C in Several Districts

Uttarakhand is likely to witness intense heat conditions over the coming days as temperatures are expected to rise steadily across the plains of the state. According to the latest weather forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Meteorological Centre Dehradun, maximum temperatures in districts such as Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Dehradun may touch or exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

In view of the rising temperatures, the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), Uttarakhand, has issued a detailed advisory to all district administrations and concerned departments, directing them to ensure necessary preparedness and precautionary measures.

Temperature Forecast for the Next Five Days

As per the IMD forecast, on May 18, maximum temperatures in Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Dehradun are expected to remain between 35°C and 40°C. In districts including Nainital, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Champawat and Almora, temperatures are likely to range between 30°C and 35°C.

On May 19, Haridwar is expected to record temperatures above 40°C, while Udham Singh Nagar, Dehradun, Nainital and Pauri Garhwal may witness temperatures between 35°C and 40°C. Temperatures in Tehri Garhwal, Almora, Champawat and lower regions of Chamoli are expected to remain between 30°C and 35°C.

Similar conditions are likely to continue on May 20, with Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar again expected to experience temperatures exceeding 40°C. Dehradun, Nainital and Pauri Garhwal are likely to remain between 35°C and 40°C, while temperatures in Tehri Garhwal, Almora, Champawat and lower hilly regions may hover between 30°C and 35°C.

According to the forecast, no significant relief from the heat is expected on May 21 and 22. Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar may continue to record temperatures above 40°C, while Dehradun, Nainital and Pauri Garhwal are expected to experience temperatures ranging from 35°C to 40°C.

Administration and Health Department on Alert

The State Emergency Operations Centre has directed all districts to intensify public awareness campaigns regarding heatwave precautions. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight during afternoon hours and to remain adequately hydrated.

The Health Department has also been instructed to ensure proper arrangements in hospitals and healthcare centres to deal with heatstroke, dehydration and other heat-related illnesses. Adequate availability of medicines, drinking water, beds and emergency medical services has been emphasized.

Focus on Water Supply, Electricity and Worker Safety

Authorities have been asked to maintain uninterrupted drinking water supply and electricity services during the high-temperature period to minimize inconvenience to the public.

Special precautionary measures have also been recommended for schools, construction sites and labourers working outdoors. Extra care has been advised for vulnerable groups including children, senior citizens and people suffering from illnesses.

The administration has appealed to residents to drink sufficient water, wear light cotton clothes and avoid stepping outdoors during peak afternoon heat unless absolutely necessary.
