Heat Wave Alert Issued for Next 24 Hours; Children, Elderly and Working People Advised to Take Extra Precautions

Health Department on Alert Mode, District Emergency Operation Centre Releases Helpline Numbers

Dehradun, May 21, 2026:
With temperatures continuing to rise across Uttarakhand, normal life has started getting affected due to the increasing impact of the heat wave. Following the Meteorological Department’s warning of severe heat conditions in several districts over the next 24 to 48 hours, the district administration and health department have been placed on high alert. Authorities have appealed to people to remain cautious and follow all necessary safety measures.

Experts have especially advised children, senior citizens, pregnant women and outdoor workers to remain extra vigilant, as prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to serious health complications.

According to the Meteorological Department, temperatures are expected to rise further in Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital and parts of Uttarkashi. Director of the Meteorological Centre, C.S. Tomar, stated that temperatures in the plains may cross 40 degrees Celsius, while hilly regions are also likely to witness above-normal temperatures.

In the state capital Dehradun, residents experienced intense heat and humidity from Wednesday morning itself. During afternoon hours, roads appeared less crowded as many people preferred staying indoors to avoid the scorching heat.

Considering the rising temperatures, the district administration has directed hospitals, primary health centres and medical units to remain fully prepared. The Health Department has also instructed medical institutions to ensure the availability of essential medicines, ORS and emergency treatment facilities to deal with cases of heat stroke and dehydration.

Senior Medical Officer Dr. S.K. Jha appealed to people to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement between 11 AM and 4 PM. He advised that those who must step outside should cover their heads with umbrellas, caps or cotton cloth and protect their faces with masks or light fabric.

He further advised citizens to stay hydrated by consuming sufficient water and fluids throughout the day. Drinks such as lemon water, coconut water, buttermilk and jaljeera, along with water-rich fruits like watermelon, are considered beneficial during extreme heat conditions.

Dr. Jha warned that symptoms such as dizziness, headache, excessive sweating, high fever, vomiting, weakness or unconsciousness during a heat wave should not be ignored. He said immediate medical attention is necessary, as heat stroke can become life-threatening if timely treatment is not provided.

The district administration has appealed to people to avoid stepping out unnecessarily during peak heat hours and to take special care of children and elderly family members. Officials emphasized that awareness, precaution and timely treatment are the best ways to minimize the adverse effects of heat waves.

On the directions of District Magistrate Savin Bansal, the District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC) has been activated for heat wave-related assistance and complaints. Citizens can seek help through helpline numbers 2726066, 2626066, and WhatsApp number 7534826066 in case of any emergency or assistance requirement.
