Orange Alert Declared for Several Districts Amid Forecast of Thunderstorms, Hail and Strong Winds

Dehradun, May 27, 2026:
Residents of Uttarakhand are likely to get relief from the ongoing intense heat as the weather is expected to change significantly over the coming days. According to the latest forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Dehradun, several districts of the state may witness rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms and strong gusty winds.

As per the forecast released on May 27, 2026, an Orange Alert has been issued for Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts on May 28. The department has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hailstorms and strong winds blowing at speeds of 40–50 kmph, which may intensify up to 60 kmph in isolated areas.

Apart from these districts, other parts of the state are also likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning activity and gusty winds.

The weather is expected to become more active on May 29, 2026, for which an Orange Alert has again been issued for Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts. These areas may witness heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms and strong winds reaching up to 60 kmph.

The IMD has specifically warned of heavy rainfall at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts.

For May 30 and 31, a Yellow Alert has been issued across the state. In view of the possible adverse weather conditions, the State Emergency Operations Centre has directed all concerned district administrations to remain alert and ensure necessary precautionary arrangements.

Authorities have been instructed to maintain close monitoring in sensitive areas, keep disaster management teams on alert mode and ensure readiness of all emergency response resources for prompt action if required.

Vinod Kumar Suman, Secretary of Disaster Management and Rehabilitation, has appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather conditions and stay in safe locations. He also advised people to stay away from trees, electric poles and weak structures during lightning and strong winds, and to follow all weather advisories and administrative guidelines issued from time to time.
