Heat Wave Alert: District Administration on High Alert to Ensure Public Safety

Meteorological Department Warns of Severe Heat Conditions; Temperature in Doon and Plains Likely to Touch 40°C
Dehradun, May 20, 2026:
In view of the continuously rising temperatures and the possibility of a heat wave, the district administration has intensified preparedness measures across the district. Acting on the directions of District Magistrate Savin Bansal, all concerned departments have been instructed to remain on high alert and ensure coordinated action to tackle the situation effectively.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Dehradun, temperatures are expected to rise by 1 to 3 degrees Celsius over the coming days, with maximum temperatures in the plains likely to exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
The weather department has forecast extremely hot conditions in Dehradun city and adjoining plain areas. In particular, temperatures in Jolly Grant and Doiwala are expected to remain between 35°C and 40°C. Considering the seriousness of the situation, the district administration has directed all concerned departments, including health, drinking water, electricity, municipal bodies, education, labour, and disaster management, to immediately ensure all necessary preventive and relief arrangements.
As per the directions of the District Magistrate, the District Emergency Operation Center (DEOC) has been placed on 24×7 alert mode. The Health Department has been instructed to ensure adequate availability of essential medicines, ORS, IV fluids, and other medical facilities in all hospitals, Community Health Centres (CHCs), and Primary Health Centres (PHCs). Special medical arrangements have also been directed for the treatment of heat stroke and dehydration cases.
Municipal bodies have been instructed to ensure the availability of drinking water, shaded areas, and water tankers at public places, markets, bus stands, railway stations, and major intersections. Temporary shelters and rest areas will also be developed in crowded locations.
The Electricity Department has been directed to maintain uninterrupted power supply and ensure that drinking water services remain unaffected. The Jal Sansthan and Drinking Water Department have been instructed to ensure regular water supply and deploy additional water tankers in water-scarce areas.
Keeping in mind the safety of labourers working at construction sites, industrial units, and outdoor workplaces, instructions have been issued to limit working hours to morning and evening periods. Adequate arrangements for shade, drinking water, and first aid facilities for workers have also been mandated.
The Education Department has been directed to take necessary decisions regarding changes in school timings or holidays based on weather conditions. Adequate drinking water and first aid arrangements will also be ensured in schools and Anganwadi centres.
The district administration has instructed ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, and Gram Panchayat-level personnel to regularly monitor elderly citizens, pregnant women, young children, and critically ill patients during the heat wave period.
Additionally, public awareness campaigns regarding heat wave precautions will be carried out through social media, FM radio, local newspapers, mobile messages, and public announcement systems.
The Animal Husbandry Department has also been instructed to ensure drinking water and shaded spaces for animals. Municipal bodies and concerned departments have been directed to provide adequate drinking water and safety measures for sanitation workers, Home Guards, police personnel, and field staff working outdoors.
District Magistrate Savin Bansal has directed all departments to maintain close coordination and continuous monitoring to effectively deal with any emergency situation. He has also appealed to the public to avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and follow all necessary precautions to protect themselves from heat wave conditions.
