Uttarakhand Plans to Develop Tehri Lake Region as a Global Tourism Destination

Dehradun, May 07, 2026:
The Uttarakhand government has initiated a major plan to establish the Tehri Lake region as an international tourism hub under the “One State, One Global Destination” vision. In this regard, Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan chaired a high-level meeting with senior officials of various departments at the Secretariat on Thursday and directed them to prepare a comprehensive and long-term development plan for the Tehri region.

During the meeting, the Chief Secretary said that in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “One State, One Global Destination,” the Tehri Lake Ring Road and surrounding areas should be developed as a world-class tourism destination through a holistic and integrated master plan.

He directed that the Tehri Special Area Development Authority (TADA) should function as the Destination Management Organization (DMO) for the project to ensure better coordination among departments and smooth implementation of the development works.

Emphasizing sustainable and balanced development, the Chief Secretary instructed officials to preserve the natural beauty and green cover of the region while creating modern tourism infrastructure. He said the proposed plan should include the construction of the Tehri Lake Ring Road, iconic bridges, green pedestrian pathways, eco parks, wellness centers, adventure tourism facilities, and scenic viewpoints.

He further stated that while the implementation could be carried out in phases, the overall master plan should be prepared comprehensively from the outset to ensure effective long-term execution.

The meeting also focused on strengthening end-to-end connectivity to Tehri. The Chief Secretary directed officials to work on road widening, beautification, and exploring alternative routes to improve accessibility. He stressed that all construction activities should be site-specific and environmentally sensitive so that the ecological balance and scenic charm of the area remain intact.

The project proposal also includes the development of a waterdrome and waterport in the Tehri Lake region. The Chief Secretary instructed that the design of iconic bridges should take into account the future operation of seaplanes. He also directed officials to upgrade the helipad near the Dobara-Chanthi Bridge into a modern heliport.

Calling the project highly ambitious and strategically important, the Chief Secretary emphasized the need for close coordination among all departments and agencies involved to transform the Tehri region into an internationally recognized tourism and investment destination.

The meeting was attended by Secretary Sachin Kurve, Dr. Pankaj Kumar Pandey, Dhiraj Garbyal, Additional Secretaries Vineet Kumar and Abhishek Rohila, along with senior officials from the concerned departments.
