Shivalik College Assistant Professor Arrested for Allegedly Leaking UTU Semester Exam Questions via WhatsApp
Dehradun, July 23, 2026:
In a major crackdown on examination malpractice, Dehradun Police arrested an assistant professor of Shivalik College of Engineering, Jhajhra, for allegedly leaking questions related to the Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU) semester examination through a WhatsApp group before the exam.
The action was taken as part of an ongoing campaign against examination fraud and paper leak networks under the leadership of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Dehradun.
University Complaint Triggered Investigation
The case came to light after Dr. Vinay Kumar Patel, Controller of Examinations at Uttarakhand Technical University, submitted a written complaint at Prem Nagar Police Station.
According to the complaint, during the university’s even-semester examinations, the university received an email regarding the examination conducted on July 8, 2026. The email alleged that on July 3, 2026, an assistant professor at Shivalik College of Engineering had shared several important questions with students through a WhatsApp group before the examination.
After the examination concluded, university officials compared the shared questions with the actual question paper and found a significant similarity between them.
Internal Inquiry Confirmed Allegations
Following the complaint, the university constituted an internal inquiry committee. During the investigation, it was found that the assistant professor had shared questions similar to those appearing in the examination through students’ internal communication platforms and WhatsApp before the examination.
The university alleged that the accused compromised the confidentiality of the examination system with the intention of giving students an unfair advantage.
FIR Registered Under BNS Provisions
Based on the complaint, Prem Nagar Police registered FIR No. 144/2026 under Sections 316, 318(4), and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Considering the seriousness of the case, the SSP directed the investigating officer to collect evidence promptly and initiate strict legal action against the accused.
Assistant Professor Arrested
During the investigation, police examined witness statements, documentary evidence, and other material collected in the case. Based on the evidence, the named accused, Ashish Kumar Gupta, an Assistant Professor at Shivalik College of Engineering, Jhajhra, was arrested.
The accused is a 40-year-old resident of Shakumbhari Vihar, Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
Electronic Devices Under Examination
Police said that the electronic devices recovered from the accused are being examined to determine the extent of the alleged information leak. Investigators are also collecting evidence to identify whether other individuals were involved in the conspiracy. Appropriate legal action will be taken against anyone found involved.
Police stated that the investigation is ongoing and further arrests may follow if additional involvement is established through evidence.
