On the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a special awareness programme was organized at Mussoorie Town Hall under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. The event was jointly organized by the Department of Social Welfare, Government De-addiction Centre (Raiwala), and the Society for Promotion of Youth and Masses (SPYM) with the objective of sensitizing stakeholders in the tourism and hospitality sector about the harmful effects of drug abuse and promoting safe, responsible tourism in Uttarakhand.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from Mussoorie’s municipal councillors, local business community representatives, including Trade Association President Rajat Agrawal, as well as owners, managers, and staff of leading hotels, resorts, and guest houses. Representatives from renowned hospitality establishments, including Radisson and LB Hotel, also attended the event.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Rajesh Kumar highlighted the growing threat posed by drug abuse and its adverse impact on society as well as the tourism industry. He emphasized that creating a drug-free tourism environment requires the active participation of hotel operators, hospitality professionals, local communities, and law enforcement agencies.

Dr. Kumar also briefed participants on the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, explaining the legal responsibilities of hospitality establishments and the consequences of non-compliance. He provided practical guidance on identifying suspicious behaviour, recognizing drug-related activities, maintaining vigilance within hotel premises, and promptly reporting any suspicious incidents to the authorities.

Speakers noted that Uttarakhand, known for its scenic beauty and world-renowned pilgrimage and tourist destinations, must ensure a safe and drug-free environment for visitors. They stressed that responsible tourism and community participation are essential to preserving the state’s image as a secure and welcoming travel destination.

At the conclusion of the programme, all participating hotel owners, managers, and employees took a collective pledge to maintain drug-free workplaces, spread awareness among staff and guests, support anti-drug initiatives, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities whenever necessary.

The programme concluded with a shared commitment that coordinated efforts by the government, administration, tourism stakeholders, and local communities will play a vital role in making Uttarakhand a model state for safe, responsible, and drug-free tourism.
